Locally from Moreton Bay (southern Queensland) to Perth (Western Australia), including Lord Howe Island and Tasmania. Sharks’ geographic ranges are not well known. These denticles feel very rough when rubbed in a forward direction but flatten and smoothen in a backward direction reducing hydrodynamic drag making swimming more efficient and quieter than bony fish. I would regard only three, possibly four, of all the species as “man-eating sharks“. The oldest species of shark lived over 420 million years ago and were very different than modern sharks.

The name originates with the Australian Aborigines, which is appropriate, given that seven of the eight described species are most abundant or only occur around Australia. (There appears to be a couple of undescribed species that occur on reefs of Indonesia and the Philippines that have long been misidentified as one of the described Orectolobus species.)
