The discovery was made when the team transporting the fossil reluctantly decided to break it for transportation by helicopter; once the bone was broken, the apparent soft tissue was seen and the team decided not to apply the preservatives often immediately applied to excavated dinosaur fossils. To successfully clone an extinct animal, scientists need to find animal DNA that is almost entirely intact, so some species will make better candidates for resurrection than others. Not until more fossils turned up did the dinosaur get a new shape.

Mosasaurus inhabits a lagoon in the Jurassic World theme park, where it features its own attraction, the "Mosasaurus Feeding Show", in which it is fed great white sharks. [10] [11] The Mosasaurus played a part in the defeat of Indominus rex, where it dragged it into the lagoon after it was cornered by the Tyrannosaurus and a Velociraptor. [9] The film's Mosasaurus was criticized for being twice the size of the largest known species. [10] Paleontologist Jack Horner, the film's technical advisor, said "the size of this one is a little out of proportion, but we don't know the ultimate size of any extinct animal." [11] Indominus rex is a new, genetically modified, hybrid mutant dinosaur and the main antagonist in Jurassic World.

Although the formidable comparative anatomist Sir Richard Owen maintained that dinosaurs walked on all fours, Joseph Leidy realized that the small size of the hadrosaur's forelimbs suggested that it was bipedal. The Triassic Period fauna included a large number of species of such life forms as prehistoric amphibians, reptiles, insects, crustaceans, mollusks, mammals, fish, and synapsids.

In contrast to the Biblical worldview, the naturalist interpretation of Earth's history holds that dinosaurs dominated the Earth for more than 100 million years, and went extinct about 65 million years ago, about 55 million years before the first humans appeared on Earth. The Hell Creek formation is set just above the K-T boundary and represents the millions of years just before the extinction of the dinosaurs. Based on the current distribution of fossil evidence, it appears that feathers were an ancestral dinosaurian trait, though one that may have been selectively lost in some species. [136] Direct fossil evidence of feathers or feather-like structures has been discovered in a diverse array of species in many non-avian dinosaur groups, both among saurischians and ornithischians.
