Birds are most closely related to crocodiles. The term "Dinosauria" was invented by Sir Richard Owen in 1842 to describe these "fearfully great reptiles," specifically Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, and Hylaeosaurus, the only three dinosaurs known at the time. The fact that Europelta, found in Spain, is so similar to the other European Nodosauridae suggests that Europe and North America separated around 110 million years ago, rather than 80 million years as was previously thought.

After a century of hypotheses without hard evidence, beautifully preserved - and legitimate - fossils of feathered dinosaurs were discovered during the 1990s and 2000s. Features of Bullockornis's skull, including a very large beak suited to shearing, indicate that the bird may have been carnivorous. There could be no doubt: Europasaurus was a dwarf. Other, less obvious constraints originating from mastication were discovered through the fermentation experiments of Hummel et al. (2008).
